Lode gold (hard rock gold) deposits vary greatly in gold grain size, liberation status and sulfide association. Gravity separation, froth flotation and cyanide leaching (CIP/CIL) are the three dominant industrial routes. Each has distinct boundaries of application, recovery performance, capital expenditure and environmental requirements. Many operating plants combine two or three processes in series for refractory gold feed.

1. Gravity Separation

Gravity concentration relies on the large density gap between native gold and silicate gangue. Centrifugal concentrators, jigs and shaking tables are typical equipment. It works best for coarse, free-liberated gold particles in quartz vein ore.

Advantages: No chemical reagents, low operating cost, simple operation, fast gold recovery and low tailings risk.

Limitations: Poor performance for fine gold and gold locked inside pyrite or arsenopyrite. It rarely acts as a standalone circuit for most lode mines and is usually installed inside grinding closed circuits to capture coarse gold ahead of flotation or leaching.

 2. Gold Flotation

Flotation targets gold hosted in sulfide minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. After fine grinding to liberate sulfide carriers, xanthate collectors and frothers render gold-bearing sulfides hydrophobic. Sulfide concentrates with enriched gold are collected in froth.

Advantages: High selectivity for fine disseminated gold locked in sulfides; drastically reduces tonnage sent to downstream metallurgy; concentrate can be traded or treated by roasting, pressure oxidation or leaching.

Limitations: Cannot recover fully oxidized free gold; consumes flotation reagents; the resulting sulfide concentrate often requires further pre-treatment before gold extraction. Flotation is widely adopted for gold-sulfide refractory lode ore.

 3. Cyanide Leaching (CIP / CIL)

Cyanidation dissolves exposed metallic gold in alkaline cyanide solution. Carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-leach are the mainstream configurations for free-milling oxide lode gold. Loaded carbon goes through desorption and electrowinning to produce gold cathode.

Advantages: High gold recovery for well-liberated oxide gold ore; mature, standardized engineering technology suitable for large-scale production.

Limitations: Cyanide toxicity demands strict safety, containment and tailings detoxification systems. If gold is encapsulated inside sulfides, direct cyanidation delivers low recovery and pre-oxidation is mandatory. Operating and environmental compliance costs are higher than physical separation.

 Practical Selection Summary

Coarse free gold-bearing quartz vein ore prioritizes gravity recovery. Fine gold associated with sulfide gangue is suited for flotation to produce gold concentrate. Fully liberated oxide lode gold with minimal sulfide is the ideal feed for CIP/CIL cyanidation. For complex deposits, a combined flowsheet such as gravity + flotation, or flotation concentrate roasting followed by cyanidation, is commonly adopted to maximize overall gold recovery.
