Gold heap leaching is a low-capital, large-scale hydrometallurgical process, yet it cannot adapt to all gold ores. Its applicability depends mainly on oxidation degree, permeability, clay content, gold liberation and gangue interference.

Heap leaching is best suited for free-milling oxide and semi-oxide gold ore. Gold in these ores has been exposed after weathering, with no tight encapsulation by sulfide minerals. Lixiviant can easily contact gold particles to achieve stable leaching recovery. Typical grade ranges from 0.5 g/t to 2 g/t, including marginal ore, open-pit waste rock and old tailings that cannot support conventional CIL plants.

Good permeability is another key requirement. Suitable ores are quartz-type weathered ore with low clay and fine silt content. After coarse crushing, the ore pile maintains uniform liquid penetration without channeling or blinding. High-clay ore easily blocks voids inside the heap; if heap leaching is adopted, agglomeration with cement is required to improve permeability.

Large reserve volume and simple mineral association are also favorable conditions. Heap leaching has long leaching cycles and low unit processing cost, which fits deposits with huge reserves but low unit value. Mines in remote areas with insufficient water supply and limited power infrastructure can benefit greatly from heap leaching.

By contrast, heap leaching is generally not recommended for refractory sulfide gold ore, carbonaceous preg-robbing gold ore and ore with massive copper, arsenic and antimony minerals. Sulfide encapsulation prevents gold liberation; carbonaceous matter adsorbs dissolved gold and lowers recovery; soluble heavy metal impurities consume lixiviant sharply and raise operating costs.

Column leaching tests must be carried out before engineering design to verify leaching rate, permeability and reagent consumption. Combined with anti-seepage pad design, solution collection system and environmental protection facilities, heap leaching can safely and efficiently develop gold resources that were once regarded as uneconomical.
